Canada extended diesel-tax relief. Do not count it twice.

The October 29 law extends relief through January. Use a 2,000-litre example to plan for the February and April federal excise changes without double-counting savings.

What the dated figures mean

Keep your current fuel quote as the starting point. Canada has extended the zero federal diesel excise rate through January 31, 2027. For a hypothetical 2,000 litres, the later 2¢ and 4¢ rates represent C$40 and C$80 tax components, before other taxes, assuming full pass-through and unchanged other prices. The extension does not justify subtracting another 4¢ per litre from today's invoice.

An extension, with two future steps

Bill C-38 received royal assent on October 29, 2026. Finance Canada's release that day sets out the diesel schedule below; CRA updated its explanatory notice on October 30. The legislation continues relief that began April 20. It does not establish a fresh pump-price drop on the day of assent.

These are federal excise rates, not total diesel prices. CRA applies the periods to specified manufacturing, licensed-wholesaler delivery and import transactions. Inventory and retail pricing can affect when a change reaches your purchase. The timetable is current as checked November 3; confirm it again before using a future rate.

What the tax component means for 2,000 litres

Assume a Canadian operator buys 2,000 litres in each comparison period. This is hypothetical consumption, not a typical fleet estimate. To isolate this one component, assume the federal excise is fully passed through, all other prices stay unchanged and other tax effects are excluded.

Current enacted diesel schedule · hypothetical 2,000 litres · CAD, before other taxes
PeriodFederal excise per litreComponent on 2,000 litres
Through January 31, 2027C$0.00C$0
February 1–March 31, 2027C$0.02C$40
From April 1, 2027C$0.04C$80

The arithmetic is 2,000 × C$0.02 = C$40 and 2,000 × C$0.04 = C$80. April's component is C$40 above February–March, or C$80 above the zero-rate period. Do not add C$80 on top of February's C$40. These figures isolate tax exposure; they do not forecast your total fuel bill.

Keep the saving in the right place

  • Start with the dated price you actually expect to pay. Do not deduct theoretical relief again from a current fuel quote. If comparing with a pre-relief budget, label that older baseline.
  • For work crossing February or April, test each applicable period separately using your expected litres. Replace the illustration with your own volumes and price scenarios.
  • Review your agreement's fuel benchmark, update frequency and allowed adjustments. The government excise schedule is not itself a customer surcharge schedule.

Recheck the wider job in the free calculator: select CAD and replace every dollar input, including the default US diesel benchmark. Distances remain miles and fuel must be entered in CAD per US gallon. The currency selector does not convert amounts or units. Pro supports saved CAD profiles with kilometres; enter consistent costs there too.
